Metal Spinning Design Guidelines

Metal Spinning Advantages
  • Cold working improves tensile strength
  • Forming process strengthens grain structure
  • Cost advantages over casting or forging
  • Uncomplicated tooling reduces lead times
  • Lower cost, lighter weight parts
Metal Spinning Shapes
  • Symmetrical circular shapes-cones
  • Minimum radii of about 1 to 1.5 times material thickness
Materials
  • Church Metal forms material from 24 gage up to 5/16" thick steel
  • Common Steel: Cold rolled, hot rolled, A36
  • High Strength Steel: Corten, Exten
  • Stainless Steel: 304,316,321,409,430
  • Nickel Based Alloys: Hastelloy, Inconel
  • Copper and Brass
  • Aluminum: O temper, H14, H32, 1100, 6061, 3003, 5052
Tolerances
  • The tighter the tolerances of a part the more time and care needs to be taken to achieve those tolerances. The table shows guidelines for the cost concious, standard commercial parts and specialized parts.

  Cost Standard Special
Up to 6" +/-.030" +/-.015" +/-.002"
Up to 12" +/-.030" +/-.015" +/-.005"
Up to 24" +/-.060" +/-.030" +/-.010"
Up to 36" +/-.080" +/-.030" +/-.015"
Up to 50" +/-.125" +/-.060" +/-.030"
