Roughly three years ago, our in-house machinist proposed purchasing a lathe capable of handling complex forming tools and refinishing older ones. After a detailed evaluation, we chose the ProtoTRAK RLX lathe — a modern, computer-assisted precision machine known for its intuitive interface, solid construction, and outstanding repeatability.

From Digital Design to Finished Tool
Our process begins with a DXF file that defines the exact shape and dimensions of the finished tool. Using CAD data ensures accuracy from the start. The machinist imports the file into the ProtoTRAK control system, where feeds, speeds, and tool paths are programmed for efficiency and precision.
For tooling that supports close-tolerance spun parts, we start with A2 tool steel — known for its toughness, dimensional stability, and resistance to wear. The steel’s ability to maintain shape through machining and heat treatment makes it ideal for high-pressure spinning applications.
Once the rough and finish passes are complete, we proceed to heat treatment, hardening the tool to 58–60 Rockwell C. This step is critical for long-term performance, ensuring the tool resists deformation, galling, and surface wear. After heat treatment, we perform a final true-up — aligning the tool precisely in its mount and polishing the forming surface to achieve an optimal finish.
